Glossary
Words we use on the site, defined once.
Short, factual definitions so the scorecards and mobile notes stay readable.
Nothing here is a promotion. Definitions describe how the industry and UK regulation generally work; always check an operator’s own help pages for product-specific rules.
- UKGC / UK Gambling Commission
- The regulator for gambling in Great Britain. Remote casinos serving GB customers must hold the relevant Commission licence and display it.
- Affiliate link
- A tracked URL. If you register through it, the referring site may earn a commission. On Jackpot Northbound these are labelled near the showcase and explained in our disclosure.
- Welcome offer
- A promotional package for new accounts — often a deposit match, free spins, or a combination. Subject to wagering and other terms; never a guarantee of profit.
- Wagering requirement
- How many times bonus funds (and sometimes the deposit) must be played through before you can withdraw related winnings. Always read the multiple and game weighting.
- Live casino / live dealer
- Real-time table games streamed from a studio with a human dealer. On mobile, look for stable video and simple table filters.
- Game studio / provider
- The company that builds the slot or live product (for example NetEnt, Play’n GO, Evolution). Operators licence catalogues from multiple studios.
- RTP
- Return to Player — a long-run theoretical percentage of stakes returned as winnings across a huge number of rounds. It is not a short-session promise.
- Volatility
- How uneven a slot’s payout pattern tends to be. Higher volatility usually means longer quiet stretches and less frequent larger hits in the model.
- RNG
- Random Number Generator — the system that produces unpredictable outcomes for non-live games. Licensed operators use tested RNG implementations.
- GAMSTOP
- Free multi-operator self-exclusion for people who want a break from all UK-licensed online gambling for a set period.
- Reality check
- A timed reminder that you have been logged in for a chosen duration. Available on UK-licensed accounts as part of safer-gambling tools.
- Native app
- A casino application installed on iOS or Android, as opposed to playing in the mobile browser. Quality varies; we note both where relevant.
